Outreach event Nationally and Globally

As a part of the year-long celebration to mark 175 years (1847-2022) of establishment, the Indian Institute of Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) organized various alumni outreach event nationally and globally.

The first celebration event was held at Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) on March 27, 2022. Continuing the celebration activities 4 more events were conducted after that: Alumni meet in Kathmandu, Nepal on 9th June; 2022, Alumni Meet in Kolkata on 17th July, 2022; Alumni meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 9th August, 2022; Alumni meet in London on 17th September, 2022.

Alumni Meet at IIT Gandhinagar

The event at IITGN on 27th March, 2022 was conducted in Jasubhai Memorial Auditorium in IITGn which was graced by many dignitaries and senior alumni of IIT Roorkee, such as Prof Sudhir Jain, former Director, IITGN and incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University; Shri N M Bijlani, Retd IAS and former Municipal Commissioner, Ahmedabad, and former President, Ahmedabad Chapter; Smt Kumud Mukherjee, Practising Architect and former President, Ahmedabad Chapter etc. among many others who attended the event with their spouses.

Prof Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee handed mementos to senior alumni of the Institute in Gujarat who had completed 50 years of graduation. The list included Shri N M Bijlani (1958 batch), Smt Surekha Kumra Chadha (1962 batch), Shri A K Pradhan (1963 batch), Smt Kumud Mukerjee (1965 batch), Shri H K Gupta (1966 batch), Shri S C Gupta (1966 batch), Shri R K Tyagi (1967 batch), Shri Vijai Kumar (1967 batch), Shri K L Gulati (1968 batch), Shri K G Yadav (1969 batch), Shri Manoj Joshi (1970 batch), and Shri Shyam Taneja (1971 batch). Office bearers from IIT Roorkee provided a briefing about the alumni meet.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sudhir Jain, former Director, IITGN and incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Banaras Hindu University, remarked, “IIT Roorkee has not only been the pioneer in the field of research and innovation but also fostered the academia-industry relationship for the larger interest of society and the nation. I heartily congratulate IIT Roorkee for making distinguished contributions and taking this initiative for alumni engagement which will work as a cyclic process motivating as well as rewarding both the alumni as well as the institution.”

Alumni Meet at Kathmandu, Nepal

The first international get-together and the second alumni meet as a part of celebration of 175 years of the institute’s foundation was conducted on June 9, 2022 at Aloft Hotel, Thamel, Khatmandu with the participation of Education minister of Nepal as Chief Guest, and Counsellor for the Indian Embassy as Guest of Honor

From IIT Roorkee, Director, Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi, Deputy Director, Prof. M Parida; Dean of International Relations, Prof. Arumugam and Dean of Resources and Alumni Affairs, Prof. Partha Roy joined the event along with eminent researchers and faculty members from different departments of the Institute.

The event included presentations, felicitations and cultural events giving a glimpse of the ornate past and glorious present IIT Roorkee family.

A movie made by students of cultural council of IIT Roorkee was released, “Anant- 175 years of IIT Roorkee – Leading the Future” which gives a glimpse of the ornate past and glorious present of IIT Roorkee through a beautiful interaction between a fresher and his grandfather who also happens to be an alumnus of the same institute showcasing the outstanding facilities offered to students which result in the overall growth, professional and personality development of the students.

Hon’ble Minister, Shri. Devendra Paudel, Minister of Education, Science and Technology (Nepal), remarked,” Besides IIT Roorkee holding worldly importance, I would like to point out the similar cultural teachings and traditions that we share with India and events like IIT Roorkee’s Alumni meet will only strengthen the shared vision of collaborating in academia in making our youth ready for the challenges of 21st century.”

Alumni Meet at Kolkata

The third alumni meet as a part of 175th Anniversary of IITR was organized on July 17th,2022 in the “City of Joy” Kolkata. More than 200 alumni of the institute participated in the outreach event along with their families at Novotel, Kolkata. Retired faculty members of IIT Roorkee who are settled in Kolkata joined this event.

The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Padmashri Shri Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman of Ambuja Neotia Group as the chief guest. Other dignitaries included Shri Manoj Pant, Principal Secretary and Finance Secretary West Bengal at Government of West Bengal. The event also witnessed a briefing by Prof. Manoranjan Parida, Deputy Director IIT Roorkee, Prof. Partha Roy, Dean of Resources & Alumni Affairs IIT Roorkee, Prof. Arun Kumar, IIT Roorkee and Mr. Santosh Kumar, CEO IIT Roorkee Development Foundation.

Alumni meet in Ethiopia

The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee celebrated international academic collaboration with Ethiopia by organizing an international event in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) on 9th August, 2022 to meet and actively interact with IIT Roorkee Alumni and collaborative partner universities and potential collaborators.

Chief Guest for the event was Shri Robert Shetkintong, Ambassador, Indian High Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

IIT Roorkee delegates visiting Ethiopia were, the Deputy Director Prof M Parida, Dean of Resources and Alumni Affairs (DORA) Prof Partha Roy, Dean of International Relations Prof P Arumugam and Executive Officer from IR Office, Dr Ravikant Ranjan.

During the event, more than 100 alumni of IIT Roorkee participated out of which selected senior alumni were felicitated by the Deputy Director.

Representing Ethiopian partner institution Dr Anegagregn Gashaw, President, Debre Tabor University addressed the gathering. Further, new MoUs with Haramaya University, Ambo University and University of Gondar were signed, while MoU with Wollega University was renewed.

During the event, a cultural program was also organized for the guests and the participants, highlighting the rich heritage of Ethiopia in the field of music and dance.

Alumni Meet in London

Celebrating the 175th year of the institute, an alumni meet was organized in London Darbar, London on 17th September, 2022. More than 190 people attended the event including alumni and their spouses.
