NSS conducted various events supporting development, women empowerment, sustainability and environmental causes during the 175th year celebration of IIT Roorkee such as Sustainability Conclave, Blood donation Camp, Run for Sustainability, Tree Plantation Drive, Cloth and Book Donation Drive, Model Gaon, JEE Test series and merit-based test for classes.

Sustainability Conclave

NSS IIT Roorkee proudly commenced its first Sustainability Conclave 2022 on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of IIT Roorkee. The theme for the first edition of the Conclave was “Yearning for Viability” which witnessed Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami as the chief guest of the event in the opening ceremony on 8th April, 2022.

The Conclave perceived the idea of a sustainable future in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlighting pertinent sustainability issues, namely, cleaner energy sources, clean water as a resource, better sanitation and hygiene for all, climate change and its impact on the environment, and better healthcare.

The conclave spanned across 5 days starting 6th April, 2022 with Run for Sustainability and ending on 10th April, 2022 with various quizzes, workshops and guest lectures.

Blood Donation Camp

NSS in collaboration with NCC IIT Roorkee, organized a blood donation camp on the occasion of World Health Day (7th April, 2022), in association with three blood banks: Maa Ganga Blood Centre, IMA Dehradun and Mother Teresa Blood Bank.

A part of the Sustainability Conclave, the camp, was conducted at Students Activity Centre and lasted nearly 9 hours. Door to door awareness by NCC team led to 1000+ registrations for the camp. The combined collection of all 3 blood banks was nearly 850+ units. Refreshments and goodies were provided to all participants.

Mr. Suresh Kumar Saini, a world record holder in the number of times he’s donated blood with donation count of 223 units, graced the occasion as the chief guest of the occasion.

Run for Sustainability

NSS IIT Roorkee had organized a Run for Sustainability among IIT Roorkee students on 6th April, which was conducted from Mahatma Gandhi Library and ended after completing one round of the Campus. All the 600 participants were given T-shirts, and the winners were awarded with Cash Prizes.

Tree Plantation Drive

In view of the celebrations of 175 years of IIT Roorkee’s Foundation & the introduction of the new vertical of ‘Sustainability’ under NSS IIT Roorkee this year onwards, a ‘Plantation Drive’ was inaugurated on the occasion of NSS day (24th September) by Prof. Manoranjan Parida (Deputy Director, IIT Roorkee), wherein NSS IIT Roorkee pledged to plant 175 saplings for a greener world and also signify the 175 years of IIT Roorkee.

Also, on the occasion of new year, plants were given to the Deans of IIT Roorkee and on NCC day, plants were distributed to army officers and the chief guest as a part of this drive.

Cloth and Book Donation Drive

Abiding by the motto, “Not for me, but for the nation,” NSS IIT Roorkee continued its annual noble endeavor of organizing collection and distribution of clothes during winter season to help the needy and poor. This 175th year of IITR, in addition to clothes, the team also collected old books serving as an eco-friendly method to channel knowledge & information to underprivileged children with ample support and generous contribution of students, staff and residents of the campus.

A team of dedicated volunteers of NSS IIT Roorkee went to local areas and 2 nearby villages conducting a rigorous 2-day distribution drive on January 7-8, providing new blankets and collected clothes to the poor.

NSS IIT Roorkee is also planning to set up a library in a nearby village in the future aimed at providing easy access to a variety of informative books for the children.

Model Gaon

To break the walls of potential and to promote self-reliance among rural women, the Women Empowerment cell of NSS IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with Model Gaon, organized various events including a lucid webinar by Dr. Manisha Bhise (FPA, India) followed by an edifying workshop on “Small Scale Business” by the NSS team during the month of August, 2021.

The women were educated about the importance of ‘self-reliance’ and the workshops were able to light a spark in them to start the business and for long term customer provision, they were collaborated with Amazon karigar - an Amazon initiative to bring to the fore India's rich handicrafts heritage sourced locally from across the country.

JEE Test Series- AITS

NSS IIT Roorkee had launched JEE Test Series for the serious JEE aspirants before JEE Main Examination, on 27th March 2022. 150+ students from rural backward regions had actively participated in the test and enhanced their problem-solving skills just before the MAIN examination. Paper Discussion Session after every paper and one to one intersecting session were conducted to help the students avoid mistakes and boost up their confidence enough to score well in the examination.

The month-long initiative of JEE Cell of NSS IIT Roorkee, where on weekends Tests were conducted and their discussions were scheduled on weekdays, ended up by the selection of 3 students in JEE MAIN Examination.

AITS initiative is to remain operational every year before JEE Mains Examination.

Merit based test for classes 4th, 7th, 9th and 11th

Merit based test initiative was planned by NSS IITR to be conducted in 2021 but was postponed due to omicron wave to be started from the 76th Independence Day.

A total of 5 batches, 3 batches from Army Public School and 2 batches from ABN School in the Roorkee division comprising of a total 1800 students from classes 9th and 10th appeared for two tests conducted by the NSS team which included a mixed pattern of questions including mental ability, historical events and subject related questions

Plans are there to extend this initiative up to western UP and parts of NCR, also for students of classes 11th and 12th, and is targeted to be completed by 1st November 2022.
