MAI-102 is a core undergraduate mathematics course offered to UG students of IIT Roorkee, designed to build a rigorous foundation in linear algebra and probability–statistics. The course develops vector space theory over real fields, including linear transformations, inner-product spaces, orthogonality, and matrix decompositions, which form the backbone of modern applied mathematics and engineering analysis.
In addition, MAI-102 provides a systematic introduction to probability theory and statistical inference. Students study random variables and their distributions, expectation and moments, standard discrete and continuous distributions, joint and conditional distributions, and sampling theory. The course further covers estimation theory and hypothesis testing, equipping students with essential tools for data analysis, uncertainty quantification, and decision-making under randomness. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical understanding and problem-solving skills, preparing students for advanced coursework in mathematics, statistics, data science, and engineering disciplines.
It is a 4-credit course with 3 hours of lectures and 1 hour of tutorial per week. The evaluation consists of Continuous Weightage System (CWS) including quizzes, a Mid-Term Examination (MTE), and an End-Term Examination (ETE), with common grading applicable to all registered students.
