About Initiative

Government of India is proactively engaging with Africa on a continental level to develop a sustainable relation that will generate long term goodwill for India in Africa under Africa India Forum Summit III. For effective leveraging the soft prowess of Science and Technology for our engagements with Africa DST proposed collaboration with World Bank to strengthen Africa Centres of Excellence (ACE's) established in African countries with the assistance of World Bank. The modes and mechanisms to work with the World Bank supported ACEs in western, eastern and southern Africa to support capacity building through knowledge are under finalisation and expected to be announced during MUU ceremony.

The aim of ACE-I and ACE-II are to achieve and to promote regional specoalization among participating universities in areas that address specific common regional development challenges. The ACE-II targets by the end of project, number of students and female students enrolled in ACEs masters and PhD programs.

Based on four thematic areas: Material science, Water Management & Infrastructure, Railways & ICT and the twelve ACEs across Africa in these areas where India will be engaged with initially seven IITís and two of the DST institutions (JNCASR & ARCI) can participate from India on a twinning model.

Visits of faculty from their institutions for short duration teaching, visits for discussion on the research and curricul development (up to 2 weeks) in ACEs and about the visits of students from ACEs enrolled in selected programs to relevant Indian Academic and R&D Institutions for training and research.

The organizing of the workshops in relevant Indian Academic and R&D Institutions on curriculum design for selected programs and calls for mutual understanding between all Indian Academic, R&D Institutions and DST for promotion, preparation and organization of joint seminars and workshops are also envisaged.

It is expected that quality of postgraduate programs and offered research opportunities to students enrolled in these programs shall be enhanced due to research and innovation projects between faculty of ACEs and faculty of relevant Indian Academic and R&D Institutions in priority areas of the ACEs. Importance and impact of Master and PhD degree from Indian Institutions for African nationals may be seen as alumni are highly placed in their respective countries after getting degree from Indian Institutions.
