Sponsored Research at IIT Roorkee is mostly supported by the funding agencies viz. DST, DBT, CSIR, MNRE, ICMR, DAE-BRNS,DRDO and various other Ministries of Govt. of India. The non Govt. organizations, industries and international funding agencies like IUSSTF, DAAD etc., have also contributed in the sponsored research over the years.

With a diverse pool of expertise, substantial outcome has been observed in research in the thematic areas of Chemical Sciences, Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals, Structural and Transportation Engineering, Materials Science and Metallurgy, Nanotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical and Manufacturing Technology, Waste Management Technologies, Renewable Energy and Environment, Energy Storage Devices, Earthquake Engineering, Disaster Management, Information Technology and Telecommunication, Smart Grid Technology, Robotics, Basic and Applied Physics, Nuclear Science, Urban Design and Development, Paper and Packaging Technology and also in Himalayan Studies.

IIT Roorkee has been involved in the Nationally important R&D schemes like Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana (UAY), IMPRINT, Namami Gange Yojana, Swachhta Action Plan, Swachh Bharat Mission, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Housing for All mission), AMRUT mission for Smart Cities, Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana and National Mission for Himalayan Studies with funding support from various Ministries.

The international linkages are being strengthened through collaborative research with the countries like USA, UK, Russia, Slovenia, Poland, Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, Belarus, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

To protect the intellectual property and also to promote innovation and incubation at IIT Roorkee,initiatives are being taken by SRIC under the leadership of Associate Dean, Innovation and Incubation (ADII). The Intellectual Property Rights Cell is integrated with ADII. (LINK FOR IPR CELL)

The processes of filing patents, technology transfers and protecting intellectual properties are facilitated through ADII at SRIC. The Technology Business Incubation (TBI) facility is provided by the incubation Center TIDES (LINK FOR TIDES WEBSITE)

A Tinkering Laboratory at IIT Roorkee has been set up to facilitate constant creation of new knowledge, and empowerment of both the students and faculty members through more participative, communicative, and innovative approach towards the development and use of technology. This laboratory is aimed to provide a platform for an innovative educational framework, where engineering fundamentals are set and applied with a holistic perspective of Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-Operating (CDIO) real world systems and products by involving post graduate students and research scholars to undertake projects with industrial relevance, focusing on value-addition besides contribution to knowledge.
