Department of Water Resources Development and Management, IIT Roorkee
Soil and Water Quality Laboratory
The Soil and Water Laboratory was inaugurated by Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Director of the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee on 5th of December 2022.
The lab has a state of art facility for water quality testing. The equipments available in our laboratory are as under:

Ion Chromatograph
Analyses of cations (ammonium, Calcium, potassium, sodium, and magnesium ) and anions (fluoride, chloride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate) in water.
The separation mechanism of ion chromatography is similar to that of ion resins, and they are all carried out by ion exchange.
Atomic Adsorption Spectrophotometer
It uses the principle that atoms (and ions) can absorb light at a specific, unique wavelength. The amount of light absorbed is measured, and the element's concentration in the sample can be calculated. The elements detected by this instrument are Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Hg, etc.
Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT)
Resistivity geophysical surveys measure variations in the electrical resistivity of the ground by applying small electric currents across arrays of ground electrodes. The survey data has to be processed to produce graphic depth sections of the thickness and resistivity of subsurface electrical layers.
UV-Vis Spectrophotometer
UV-Vis spectroscopy is an analytical technique that measures the number of discrete wavelengths of UV or visible light absorbed by or transmitted through a sample compared to a reference or blank sample.
Flame photometer
The flame photometer principle is based on measuring the emitted light intensity when a metal is introduced into the flame. The alkali (Li, Na and K) and alkaline earth metals (Ca and Mg) compounds dissociate into atoms when introduced into the flame. It is measured only in liquid samples.
Millipore water purification system
It gives metals-free water that is used in glassware cleaning, solution preparation, and others.
Multimeters
It is a transportable instrument that can be used in the field and lab. It is measured pH, DO, EC, and Fluoride.
