Roorkee is a tranquil university town situated near the foothills of the Indian Himalayas and along the renowned Upper Ganga Canal. The city has a significant place in the history of technological evolution of the country, as it was established as a consequence of the development of the Upper Ganga Canal and a training school for the canal works in 1840s as the first technical institution of India, which later grew with the tide of time to its present form, the IIT Roorkee, which is celebrating its 175th year of existence. The city is nestled within the rich biodiversity of the forests of the Shivalik range of the Indian Himalayas and also share the close proximity to the spiritually eminent city of Haridwar and Rishikesh, being the Yoga capital of the world. Roorkee being the melting pot of technology, biodiversity and spirituality, the town and its vicinity offers a great experience for a traveller within you. We will provide you with the logistical support* for the following technical as well as recreational tours after the symposium:

  • A 1-Day tour of 1000 MW Tehri Hydro-power project, comprising of India’s highest Rock & Earth-Fill Embankment Dam and state of the art Hydro-Power Complex along with real time seismic observatory comprising of 12-station seismological network around Tehri region**.
  • A 1-Day tour of the cities of Rishikesh and Haridwar on the banks of river Ganges, which promises to offer an enchanting glimpse of the cultural and spiritual heritage of India along with Rajaji National Park, a home to elephants, tigers, panthers, spotted and barking deer, sambhar, wild boar and 400 species of birds.

*Note: The department will only provide the logistical assistance in the plan and execution of tour package, while the cost of tour (at subsidised rate) will be borne by the participant.
