Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IITR) is the successor of the University of Roorkee, the oldest technical institute of the Indian sub- continent. It was established as the Roorkee College of Civil Engineering in 1847 and rechristened as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854. Recognizing its yeoman contribution for the development of the country for over 100 years, this temple of learning was elevated to the status of a University, the first technical university in India in 1949. The University of Roorkee was converted to IIT Roorkee by the Government of India on September 21, 2001, thereby further elevating it to an institute of national importance. Over the years it has built up and maintained an excellent academic reputation. IIT Roorkee has academic departments in the areas of Engineering, Sciences, Architecture, Management, Humanities and Social Sciences besides having many centers including a few center of excellence.

Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Department

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering was established in 1963 with an intake of sixty (UG) students. Later, post-graduate programme was started in 1969. The Department has been actively involved in research since its inception. The first Ph.D. was awarded in 1972. Earlier, the primary focus was on physical metallurgy, thermodynamics and kinetics of metal extraction and powder metallurgy. However, with the progress of time, many more frontier areas of metallurgy and materials engineering have been taken up for active research. The Department of Metallurgy was renamed as Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering in the year 1997 with the introduction of courses in ceramics and polymer materials, joining of materials etc. Since then, the research areas also widened to materials for different end-applications (nano, bio, energy, smart etc.) along with the different aspects of metallurgy.
