The 1st Webinar Series on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (will be held online during December 2021 to December 2022 A number of webinars by academician, eminent scientist or practicing engineer of international repute will be delivered online through social platform Cisco Webex In last two decades, activities and requirement of GEE has increased in India due to many big infrastructure projects including high rise buildings, bridges, dams and power plants Therefore, this webinar series will help in enhancing the knowledge of faculty, students and engineers to deal with geotechnical issues during earthquakes These webinars assume great significance as it will provide a platform to review the recent developments in GEE
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The Institute ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. The Institute had celebrated its Sesquicentennial in October 1996 and now completed more than 170 years of its existence. It was converted to IIT on September 21, 2001 by an Ordinance issued by the Government of India declared it as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology, an “Institution of National Importance”. The Institute offers Bachelor's Degree courses in 10 disciplines of Engineering and Architecture and Postgraduate's Degree in 55 disciplines of Engineering, Applied Science, Architecture and planning. The Institute has facility for doctoral work in all Departments and Research Centres.
The Department of Earthquake Engineering, formerly known as School for Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) was established at University of Roorkee (Now Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) in 1960, which has now completed 60 years of excellence in the service of nation. This department happens to be the only one of its kind in the country till date that deals with earthquake engineering problems and challenges. It is fully interdisciplinary since its existence, bringing together structural and soil engineers, geologist and seismologist working as a team under one roof.
The Department is engaged in teaching at Post Graduate level and conducting basic and applied research proceeding upto Ph.D. programmes along with developing Indian Standards and also training of field engineers in various aspects of earthquake engineering. Moreover, the Department of Earthquake Engineering is actively involved in carrying out sponsored research and consultancy projects through self-guiding state-of-art test facilities having capability to convert research on paper into technology for field implementation.
The ISET is a founder member of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE) and represents India on this world forum dealing with various aspects of earthquake engineering. The society is represented by its President as the National Delegate and the Vice-President as the Deputy National Delegate in the General Assembly of Delegates of the IAEE.
A number of ISET members have served on the Executive Committee of the IAEE. The Executive Committee of ISET also acts as the ‘Indian National Committee on Earthquake Engineering’. The ISET also contributes in the formulation of various Indian Standard Codes of Practice related to earthquake engineering. The President of ISET is represented on the relevant committees responsible for drafting these codes.
