VIGYAN JYOTI SCHEME of Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India was launched to bring gender parity in STEM

Vigyan Jyoti Scheme was launched in coordination with NSS IIT Roorkee Team on 13th February 2020. IIT Roorkee and Department of Science and Technology, Government of India have collaborated to bring gender parity in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) through Vigyan Jyoti Scheme (women-centric programs under the KIRAN Division). For this initiative, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas are working as implementing partner whereas IIT Roorkee is working as the Knowledge partner to motivate girls of XIth standard for STEM field.

During the opening ceremony Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, Founder, SECMOL,was present as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour was Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Roorkee including Ms. Gitanjali J B, Founding CEO, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh was also present during the event. In this formal inaugural program, the girls from JNV and KV also interacted with many lady faculties, students from various branches and degree programs at IIT Roorkee and received information on higher education and career prospects in STEM.
The coordinator from IIT Roorkee for Vigyan Jyoti program and faculty advisor for NSS and NCC, Prof Pranita P Sarangi appreciated the efforts and enthusiasm of SC Joshi, Principal of JNV, Haridwar, and other teachers of the school in implementing this program to help the XIth class girls.



Girls from JNV Haridwar, Muzaffarnagar and KV, Haridwar were present during the event along with the teachers. Prof. Pranita P Sarangi also visited Jawahar Navodaya vidyalaya to interact and motivate the girls student to dream higher and enter into the fascinating streams of the STEM field. All girls were highly excited to go for higher studies and achieve big goals.



The institute is planning to help the girls by providing appropriate information for STEM field and nurture their interest in this area by providing technical demonstrations and making them aware of the cutting age technology and skill set available in the country and abroad. The students are scheduled to interact with Ms. Moni Singh, though Skype presentation on 29th April 2020 during the international Immunology Day Celebration. Ms. Moni Singh is an alumni of IIT Roorkee and currently working in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. She is the Founder and CEO of “STEM for Kids” and engaged in promoting the interest of school children in these areas.. During this event, all students will also get an overview of Immunology and will receive a hands on experience in scientific experiments and instrumentations.

Wellness Webinar for Vigyan Jyoti Girls students during COVID-19 Pandemic:
Under Vigyan Jyoti scheme, Dr. Shikha Jain, Institute Wellness counsellor and the the nodal officer, Vigyan Jyoti, Prof. Pranita P Sarangi conducted a webinar to facilitate the mental and emotional wellbeing, help cope up with the prevailing pandemic and to motivate the Xth and XIth standard girls from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and Kendriya Vidyalayas and government high schools to stay motivated focused in their studies. It was highly appreciated by the Principal, teachers and students.



VIGYAN JYOTI BUDDIES LECTURE SERIES TO PROMOTE AWARENESS AMONG GIRLS ON STEMM EDUCATION

In Phase 1 of the Vigyan Jyoti Buddies Lecture Series starting from August 2021, Prof. Pranita Sarangi, the Vigyan Jyoti Nodal Officer and Ms. Aditi Kothiala, the Vigyan Jyoti Student Coordinator helped organize Informational Lectures for Vigyan Jyoti girls from JNVs, Kendriya Vidyalaya and government high school girl students of classes 10-12. The Vigyan Jyoti Buddies Lecture Series was delivered in an online mode by Girls from the Departments of Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Architecture and Planning and the Center for Transportation Systems. The lectures aimed to encourage girls into STEM subjects by enlightening them about various fields and also threw light on the various research areas being covered at IIT Roorkee.
During the inerractive lectures IIT Roorkee students provided extensive information on the specific engineering discipline, various branched of each engineering as well as career choices after completing a B tec, MTech or PhD degree from IITs or any technical institutions. The girls from various schools also asked many curious questions on the discussion topic which were clarified by IIT Roorkee girls and the nodal officer Prof. Pranita sarangi. The coordinator teacher from JNV also expressed her thanks to the girls and mentioned that more such lectures could be arranged for both boys and girls to provide better insight into the STEM disciplines,
