A student-run initiative, the SMP aims at "catalyzing" the induction of freshmen undergraduates "into the institute ecosystem" by assigning an experienced (pre-) senior student ("mentor") - selected through a proper selection process - to a group of four-six students ("mentees"), with each mentor taking it on as their responsibility to help and enable the freshmen group assigned to them, efficiently navigate through their college life.
The following is a summary of the activities and initiatives conducted by the SMP team: A Mentor's Training Workshop is conducted every year following a series of fun and engaging activities in ice-breaking sessions between the freshers and their mentors, making the transition to college life smooth for the freshers. During the pandemic, an information booklet was handed out about the Dos and Don'ts of being a good mentor instead as everything was being conducted virtually.
It is followed by a thorough mentee reachability survey to identify issues in the program and make it better by receiving constructive feedback from the mentors. We also conduct Institute Cross Mentorship Drive and Career Talk Series to spread awareness about a wide variety of careers which the students can pursue.
In 2020, SMP launched an initiative called LEAP (Linguistic Enhancement and Assistance Program) in collaboration with one of Delhi's finest public speaking and language training institute, Inlingua. This program aims to train and assist those students who are not able to speak, read or write in English properly; especially if this hinders their ability to understand lectures. Around 80-100 students were trained by experts under this program before the pandemic during which it was halted. The team has prepared to restart the program by Jan 2022.
SMP also has an active Facebook and Instagram handle with around 4.5K followers across both platforms which provide all the updates and initiatives taken by the group.
