National Girl Child Day 2023
National Girl Child Day was first celebrated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development on 24th Jan 2008. The objective of National Girl Child Day is to create awareness about the rights a girl owns and to give girls the opportunities like everyone else, including supporting the girl child of the nation and removing gender-based biases. Another objective of celebrating this day is to promote awareness about the inequalities that a girl child faces and educate people about girls’ education.
Taking forward IIT Roorkee's commitment to work towards bringing gender equality in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), under the Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions (GATI), and Vigyan Jyoti schemes, our institute celebrates the National Girl Child Day on 24th January. On this occasion, our institute facilitated providing support and inspiration to 50 girl students enrolled under the Vigyan Jyoti Initiative from Jawahar Navadoya Vidyalaya and Kendriya Vidyalaya Haridwar to come over to IITR for a one-day trip and interact with faculty and girl students from various departments. Additionally, they also visited multiple centers and facilities at IIT Roorkee.
GATI and Vigyan Jyoti are two major initiatives from the WISE-KIRAN Division of the Department of Science and Technology, Govt of India to promote gender equality in STEM education. IIT Roorkee is working with JNVs as the knowledge partner to bring awareness and motivate bright girl students from X, XI, and XII standards to take up STEM subjects as their future careers.
