GATI Kings College London (KCL) Interactions

1. GATI KCL Symposium

Dr Kamini Gupta began the conversation discussing the importance of gender representation in STEM, and how central it is to the quality and scope of research conducted within STEM and in enabling institutions to achieve their wider goals. Kamini also provided an overview of the work done within Action to Improve Representation (AIR), a writing and mentorship programme aimed at Early Career Researchers from under-represented groups in India. This was followed by a talk on Elevate (King's Gender Equality Network) by Rachel Stockey. Rachel provided an insight into the work done by Elevate to promote and achieve gender equality within King's, and support the career progression of women, trans women and non-binary members of staff. Rachel also outlined how vital the network has been in providing staff with a sense of community, informing policy and guiding strategy at King's.Dr Pranita Sarangi joined both Dr Kamini Gupta and Rachel Stockey for a panel Q+A in the latter half of the event, where she provided an overview of the successes of the work done at IIT Roorkee in advancing gender equality initiatives and answered questions from the audience on a range of topics.EDI can be a difficult and challenging space to work in, so it was really inspiring to hear from colleagues within King's and in India about their passion and determination for pushing through initiatives which aim to serve the betterment of marginalised communities. The conversation was humbling in that sense because while the work does present its many challenges, seeing the successes of it (as demonstrated by the work of those who spoke) served as a reminder for how rewarding it is too.
