IIT Roorkee

Main building of IIT Roorkee

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

Indian Institute of Technology - Roorkee is among the foremost of institutes of national importance in higher technological education and in engineering, basic and applied research. Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing the technical manpower and know-how to the country and in pursuit of research. The Institute ranks amongst the best technological institutions in the world and has contributed to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering.

Department of Electrical Engineering building, IIT Roorkee

Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering of the Thomson College was established in the year 1897, and was one of the earliest such specializations in the world when the discipline itself was in its infancy. The first batch of Electrical Engineering students graduated in 1900 from the Thomason College of Engineering. For a few years, between 1923 and 1946, a special committee had recommended that the College may be converted into a purely Civil Engineering Institution, but another special committee favoured the reopening of the disciplines of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. The present Department of Electrical Engineering came into being in 1946 and the first batch of electrical engineering graduates passed out of this college in 1949.

Hands-on at the digital substation testbed

The afternoon session takes participants into the PSSPL Laboratory for a working demonstration on the digital substation setup (DSS) — a live IEC 61850 environment with protection IEDs, a bay control unit, OPAL-RT and station/process bus networking, on which the laboratory's own intrusion-detection system (IDS) runs in real time.

Demonstration flow

  1. 01

    Walk the
    architecture

Trace the station and process bus layout on the testbed: HMI and gateway at station level, protection IEDs and BCU at bay level, and OPAL-RT at process level.

  2. 02

    Configure
    BCU & IEDs

See how the bay control unit and IEDs are configured and subscribe/publish SV and GOOSE.

  3. 03

    Watch SV &
    GOOSE live

Observe sampled values streaming from OPAL-RT and GOOSE trip and interlock messages on the process bus, captured and decoded live on the monitoring station.

  4. 04

    Inject a
    cyberattack

A controlled attack scenario is launched against the digital substation network to show how spoofed or replayed messages can disturb protection and control in real time.

  5. 05

    Detect with
    the IDS

The intrusion-detection algorithm developed at PSSPL flags the anomaly on the DSS instantly, and participants review how the alert is raised and what the operator sees.
