      A new Solar Energy Laboratory has been set up at Department of Hydro and Renewable Energy (HRED) (Formerly Alternate Hydro Energy Centre) with state-of -the-Art. Equipment and instruments facilities to carry out R&D and to evaluate the performance of Solar Photovoltaic and Solar Thermal System in the field.

      The main facilities include Multifunction instrument for testing single and three phase PV system (MODEL NO.: 300N), Solar array simulator of 5 kW (Model No.: 62050H-600S), Solar Energy Kit along with programmable AC/DC Electronics load, Wind Power generation system for hybrid model, Grid tied invertors test setup and Solar thermal training kit with water heating.

 

Detail of the Instruments

 

Digital Portable solar power meter - It is designed to measure solar irradiation (W/m2) and temperature (oC) It can also be used in combination with a MASTER instrument to carry out above mentioned measurements for testing/recording the efficiency of single phase and three-phase PV installations.

 

Multifunction instrument for testing single-phase and three phase PV system MODEL NO.: 300N - The instrument allows a totally new approach to the measuring world when dealing with photovoltaic systems and mains analysis on single-phase and three-phase electrical systems; the combination between instruments provided with microprocessor and the Windows CE technology allows analyzing a huge amount of data in such a simple and quick way as with no other system available. It is used for:

  • PV systems: Single-phase and three-phase photovoltaic systems.
  • NPV systems: Single-phase and three-phase non-photovoltaic electrical systems.
  • MPPT: Maximum Power Point Tracker
 

Multifunction Instrument for testing and verifying single-phase PV installations Model No.: SOLAR I-V400 - The instrument was designed to perform complete yield test on single-phase (and three-phase if combined with optional accessory MPP300) PV installations with calculations of efficiencies (only SOLAR I-V) and to perform all I-V curve tests on single modules (panels) or complete strings of photovoltaic (PV) plants in order to verify the reference parameters given by the manufacturers. Therefore, the meter is an ideal solution for troubleshooting any PV installation.

Solar array simulator for 5KW Model No.: 62050H-600S - It is a high power density DC power supplies which can provide stable DC output and accurate measurement for voltage and current. The support hardware and communication protocol can be connected to PC for command transmission.
Solar Energy Kit along with programmable AC/DC Electronics load 4.5KW/350 Vrms/45 Arms (GP-6W and 63804 series) with standard accessories, halogen lamp 250 W - The GP-6W is a entry for the solar energy conversion platform to allow users to understand the "Maximum Power Point Tracking"(MPPT), a single-chip feature is added that allows users to make changes for the "MPPT algorithm", The 63804 series provide simulated load current for the test unit they can be operated independently AC load simulation and DC load simulation, it also provide variations on input voltage, load current and power ratings. The application program and communication protocol can be connected to PC.
Wind Power generation system for hybrid model - It provides 12V and 5V power output. Efficient use of light, small size electrical generator, no iron core & brushless, low loss, starts easily.

 

Grid tied invertors test setup - It consists of (a) Grid connected inverter, (b) Solar PV modules (230Wp), and (c) Measuring devices: Ammeter, Voltmeter, Energy meter. This system will be useful various operations such as Demonstration of grid synchronization process, Evaluation of active and reactive power flow between inverter and load, Efficiency evaluation of grid tied inverter & PV modules and to demonstrate the effect of shading on the grid connected system.
Solar thermal training kit with water heating:
Solar thermal technology uses the sun's energy, rather than fossil fuels, to generate low-cost, environmentally friendly thermal energy. This energy is used to heat water or other fluids, and can also power solar cooling systems. Consists of Water and Air Heater (Flat plate collector) – 0.733 m2, Insulation Rockwool (density > 40 kg/ m3, thickness: 50 mm base, 25 mm side), Casing frame type (Thickness 1.4 mm), 0.75 m2 , One cooler 200W, One Ribbon Meter 100 m (For measuring the height of Storage Tank), Water flow meter 0.5-25 LPM for measuring water flow rate.
