Established in 1959, Cautley Bhawan is one of the oldest and most prestigious hostels at IIT Roorkee. It is home to 800+ residents, fostering a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and camaraderie.

The Bhawan is named after Sir Proby Thomas Cautley, a distinguished British engineer and paleontologist known for his pioneering role in the construction of the Ganges Canal. Recognizing the need for trained engineers to manage large-scale infrastructure projects, Cautley strongly advocated for technical education, contributing to the eventual establishment of Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1854, which later became IIT Roorkee.
