Professor Pradipta Banerji
Director, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee
Professor Pradipta Banerji has been Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee since October 2011. He concurrently holds the posts of Professor of Civil Engineering at IIT Bombay and at IIT Roorkee.
He was awarded the National Science Talent Scholarship in 1976, and graduated with a BTech degree in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1981, securing the Director’s Silver Medal as the top‐ranked student in his batch. He completed his MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 1982 and 1987, respectively. During his studies at Berkeley, he was awarded the UC Regents’ Fellowship twice, the Popert Research Fellowship and a Distinguished Teaching Award.
He has spent more than 23 years at IIT Bombay, having joined in early 1988. During this period he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award, and has been the Dean (Alumni and International Relations) for two terms of three years each, apart from holding various other administrative positions. Furthermore, in 2005, he completed an Executive Development Program at the Kellogg School of Business, Northwestern University. He has been Visiting Research Professors at Technical University Stuttgart in Germany and University of Manitoba in Canada, and been invited as Keynote Speaker at many international conferences and workshops, and is known internationally for his developments on Bridge Asset Management using Structural Health Monitoring and Vibration Control of Buildings for Earthquake Ground Motions. He has also developed technology that has been and is being implemented in India and abroad. Of course, he has guided many doctoral and masters level dissertations and has published frequently in archival journals and proceedings. He is a Fellow or Member of many professional societies, committees and boards.
During his term as Director, more than 150 faculty members have joined the institute, in addition to quite a few Distinguished Visiting Professors from universities abroad and adjunct faculty from the industry. Induction of post‐doctoral research fellows has been initiated and the numbers have increased recently. Sponsored research project funding from government and international funding agencies has increased significantly, as has funds from industry. Faculty members are also involved in large value international projects, some of them with industry partnerships. The international presence of IIT Roorkee has also increased manifolds, with many international students coming in for degree programs, and some of our research programs becoming internationally known for excellence. Students have been encouraged to participate in international competitions and have brought laurels for the institute. The academic programs at the undergraduate level have been revised to be student‐centric with flexibility of electives, and introduction of honor programs and minor area specializations. Simplification of and transparency in administrative processes and introduction of ERP for all aspects of operations at IIT Roorkee has been another highlight of his term at IIT Roorkee. The institute has also been consistently ranked internationally as one of the best academic institutions in Asia.
