  • Microsoft and IIT Roorkee collaborate to augment learning on quantum computing

    Reinforcing its commitment to help introduce new technologies to academia, Microsoft Garage India has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee to conduct lectures on quantum computing for a full semester. IIT’s BTech and MTech students can choose the course as a pool elective. The course, which has been structured by IIT Roorkee and Microsoft, will provide the students, access to Q# Programming Language practical examples, Microsoft Quantum Development Kit and Microsoft Quantum Faculty.

    IIT Roorkee, recently, inaugurated the A. N. Khosla Endowment Lecture Series on River Water Disputes. The first guest lecture was given by KG Ranga Raju. The Department of Water Resources Development and Management was established in 1955 as a training centre in water resources development for Asia, Africa, and the Far East countries. The centre was established at the University of Roorkee on November 25, 1955, and founded by Dr. A N Khosla.

    The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has roped in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee to prepare a comprehensive water management plan for the Gurugram. The decision by the agency comes at a time when the public agency is not only looking to conserve water but also improve the water supply network in the city. IIT, Roorkee, has earlier worked on water and recycled water management plans for Noida and Greater Noida, Chennai and other cities.

    The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R), of Trento, Italy along with IIT-Delhi have installed solar units in a local school to free it of its dependence on conventional energy. In a first-of-its-kind project in Uttarakhand, the energy needs of the school for cooking mid day meals, as well as powering electric bulbs, fans and gadgets are all being fulfilled by a system installed by the tech institutes.

These were balls made out of mud embedded with seeds of trees to be grown. The raw materials that comprised of sieved earth mixed with manure and seeds were provided by the institute itself.

  • Modified charkha developed by IIT Roorkee claims to offer more yield, less effort

    The Bageshwari charkha has been in use since 1926 to spin wool, which is one of the main sources of income for many rural people of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. A regular hand-operated charkha yields 70-80 gm of yarn in an hour, producing around 600 gm in eight hours, which earns the weaver Rs 90 to Rs150 per day. However, a modified version of the charkha, developed by Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) at the department of Hydro Renewal Energy (HRED), IIT Roorkee, claims to double the amount of wool produced by the device, while lessening the effort that goes into operating it.

  • IIT Roorkee researchers identify new method to detect breast and ovarian cancer

    Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee have identified a new method to detect two of the worst forms of cancer in women – breast and ovarian cancer. The research team, led by Professor Kiran Ambatipudi from the institute’s biotechnology department, identified certain proteins present in the saliva which act as potential biomarkers indicative of breast and ovarian cancer metastasis.

    IIT Roorkee has decided to institutionalise an elective course (optional course) on stainless steel and advanced carbon special steel for the fourth year B.Tech and PG students of the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. The duration course will be 3.5 months. The course is expected to commence from July 2019. The Architecture and Planning Department of IIT Roorkee will be introducing courses on stainless steel modules in March 2019." Jindal Stainless said.

    Promising some relief to those spending a considerable amount of their income on hospitals bills and medical tests, the rates of MRI, CT scan, X-Ray and ultrasound tests are set to come down by next year.     According to the researchers at IIT-Roorkee in Uttarakhand, heart rate variability, a sign of a healthy heart, has been shown to be higher in yoga practitioners than in non-practitioners. Ramesh Kumar Sunkaria, Vinod Kumar and Suresh Chandra Saxena of the Electrical Engineering Department evaluated two small groups of men in order to see whether yoga can improve heart health. The team said that in their preliminary study of 84 volunteers, there was strengthening of parasympathetic (vagal) control in subjects who regularly practice yoga, which is indicative of better autonomic control over heart rate and so a healthier heart.

It would greatly help students belongng to capital and NCR region.Ten acre campus is located in the Knowledge Park II, Plot no. 20, by the side of Express Highway at Greater Noida. It is surrounded by a large number of technical institutions and industries. IIT Roorkee, through this extension centre intends to extend its outreach to the industry and academia. This centre of IIT Roorkee will be used to undertake extension and other related activities.
  • Studies on hydropower projects' impact on 2 Ganga tributaries commissioned - Times of India

    The Union environment and forests ministry has moved fast to commission two studies on the cumulative impacts of all the hydroelectric projects planned on Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers -- two key tributaries of the Ganga in Uttarakhand. IIT Roorkee and the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, will carry out the comprehensive studies. The institutes have been asked to determine the requirement of minimum flow from the proposed and already commissioned hydroelectric projects on these rivers in their entire stretch. IIT Roorkee would address the issues of hydrology.

    The ministry of environment and forests has decided to commission IIT Roorkee and Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, to conduct an environmen assessment impact, as part of the feasibility of of the proposed hydro electric projects on Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers in Uttarakhand. So far, a review of environmental impact assessments of individual hydro electric projects have been made on a stand-alone basis. In view of the series of hydro electric projects planned, under implementation or operational on the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, the environement ministry has decided that a comprehensive study should be undertaken on the likely cumulative impact of the projects on the flow and character of the river. The study would is aimed at determining the requirement of minimum flow from the proposed and already commissioned hydro-electric projects on the entire stretch of these two rivers.

Students can check their allocation by visiting the site given below. Students must enter their 7-Digit JEE-2010 Registration Number followed by the first four characters (excluding blanks but including initials) in the NAME printed on the admit card. No blank space to be given between Registration number and the four characters in the name.

Director of IIT-Roorkee, S.C. Saxena said that because students have to appear for individual entrance examinations for various institutes, they are under a lot of pressure. "This calls out for a need to have a single commonentrance test for all engineering institutes," he added. He further said that a more analytical and skill-based admission procedure is required and also the weightage allotted to Class XII Board examinations must be increased and taken more seriously than before

    The panel of IIT directors that has recommended relying more on board examination scores than entrance test performances in picking students to engineering schools has also cautioned the government against rushing ahead with the reforms without adequate consultations.The panel has recommended that the IITs give 70 per cent weightage to board examination marks and 30 per cent weightage to performances in the aptitude test.The team which has IIT Bombay director Devang Khakhar, IIT Madras director M.S. Ananth and IIT Roorkee director S.C. Saxena as its members apart from Acharya may also ask Sibal to participate in the consultations.

Haiti's experience, where 2,30,000 people are thought to have perished in an earthquake that hit the Caribbean island in January, has heightened those concerns.The number of houses in the country went up by 45 per cent between the censuses of 1991 and 2001, said Anand S. Arya, Emeritus Professor at the Department of Earthquake Engineering in IIT, Roorkee. The number of "kachcha" houses made of clay had remained practically the same while those made with burnt brick had increased The latter, depending on the mortar used, would be a little less vulnerable than clay houses. But as most builders of brick houses would not probably have followed the code for earthquake resistance, these too could be badly damaged.

However, the management schools that are a part of these premier technology institutions are not affected and are seeing a 10-20 per cent jump in final as well as summer placement salaries.The Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee, has seen a 25 per cent increase in salaries this year over last year final placements. The highest salary this year stood at Rs 11.6 lakh offered by Deloitte, while the average stood at Rs 8.5 lakh.
