Tribology Laboratory
About
Tribology is the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. This includes study of friction, lubrication, contact mechanics, surface damage processes and surface optimization. It is highly multidisciplinary and spans many applications including physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and engineering. A particular area of current concern is the reduction of friction in order to increase the efficiency of machines and thereby reduce global energy use.
In the field of Tribology (friction, lubrication and wear), research focuses on experimentally verified computational and numerical simulation for the prediction of the static and dynamic response of tribocontacts (fluid film bearings), lubricant and rheology, hydrodynamic/elastohydrodynamic/boundary lubrications, hydrodynamic/hybrid/hydrostatic fluid film bearings.

1) Hydrodynamic Journal Bearing Test Rig:
Alt text
In this machine, a power motor is attached, via a flexible coupling, to a horizontally mounted shaft. This shaft is in turn supported by means of two spherical bearings mounted on either side of a support frame. The provision of a frequency converter allows the shaft rotational speed to be varied. The journal bearing itself is installed in a spherical steel unit which is in turn mounted within a steel “housing”.

2) Tribometer:
Alt text
A tribometer is an instrument that measures tribological quantities, such as coefficient of friction, friction force, and wear volume, between two surfaces in contact. A tribotester is the general name given to a machine or device used to perform tests and simulations of wear, friction and lubrication which are the subject of the study of tribology.

3) Amsler Wear Testing Machine:
Alt text
To determine the dynamic coefficient of friction, a laboratory test should simulate the rolling operations as closely as possible and should, therefore , be carried out under conditions of sliding and rolling friction. The Amsler Wear Testing Machine has been found to be suitable for this purpose. Under conditions of relatively light loads and low speeds, it gives the value of the coefficient of friction that exists between the peripheries of two test discs as they roll and slide on each other.
4) Coriolis Mass Flow Meter:
Alt text
The basic operation of Coriolis flow meters is based on the principles of motion mechanics. As fluid moves through a vibrating tube it is forced to accelerate as it moves toward the point of peakamplitude vibration. Conversely, decelerating fluid moves away from the point of peak amplitude as it exits the tube. The result is a twisting reaction of the flow tube during flowing conditions as it traverses each vibration cycle.
